Herrick, Charles E. (1917 - 2001)


Charles E. Herrick, 84, town of Eaton, Clark County, died on Friday, July 27, 2001, at the Palliative Care Unit at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield. Memorial services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 30, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greenwood. The Rev. Joseph Follmar officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Scott, Greg, and Steve Herrick, all of Willard Joe Mayenschein, Greenwood Jim Mayenschein, Neillsville and Dick Haase, Greenwood.


Charles Edward Herrick was born on Feb. 26, 1917, in Willard, to Jacob and Anna (nee Pintar) Herrick. He was a student at the North Mound School. In January of 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and served during WWII as a truck driver and engineer, serving in California and England before he was sent to the battlefields on Utah Beach and Luxembourg. He served until November of 1945, when he was honorably discharged. He married Mildred Ann Weber on Nov. 24, 1945, in Milwaukee. They moved to Greenwood, where he worked as a mechanic. They owned the North Mound Tavern for one year and then he returned to mechanics, working for Benny Schwellenbach for 10 years in Christie. He will be remembered as a great storyteller, who enjoyed tinkering with small motors, woodworking, time spent with his family, barbecuing pigs, and a good Slovenian song. He was known for saying, "that's a nice".


Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mildred Herrick, Greenwood three children, Jeff (Chris) Herrick, Mukwonago, Jim (Jeannie) Herrick Colfax, and Penny (Dale) Smrecek, Greenwood six grandchildren, Jordan (Gretchen) Herrick, Colfax, Austin (Rhonda) Herrick, Bloomer, Amy Herrick, Colfax, Nick and Cory Smrecek, Greenwood, and Elizabeth Herrick, Mukwonago great-grandson, Spencer Herrick, Colfax siblings, Mary Stewart, Sun City, Ariz., Jack (Emma) Herrick, Afton, Minn., Frances (Dean) Murphy, Marshall, Ill., Edward (Hazel) Herrick, Bossier City, La., Lucille (Harold) Hawley, Sun City, Ariz., Donna Smith, St. Paul, Minn., and Joan Noah, Greenwood and sister-in-law, Marcella Herrick, Colby.


He was preceded in death by his parents two sisters, Ann Petkovsek and Eva Hollowell three brothers, Joe, Florian and Robert Herrick and son, Patrick Herrick, on July 10, 1991.


Cuddie Funeral Home, Greenwood, assisted the family with arrangements.
